CTRead—Facial Bones Anatomy Training | AO CMF
Learn to interpret facial bone computed tomography correctly with this free online course
CTRead is a formal web-based training module that instructs residents in the interpretation of a computed tomography (CT) facial bone scan in a logical, stepwise manner to locate and identify all relevant facial fractures.
A study has shown that completing CTRead improves residents' competency in the interpretation of CT facial bone scans and their correct identification of the facial fractures.
CTRead is free to registered users. If you have already registered to CTRead, log in to your AO profile, and you will find a link to the course landing page on your dashboard.

Introduction to CTRead—Facial Bones Anatomy Training
The subsequent modules focus on fractures and anatomy of individual facial structures: the mandible, maxilla, nasal bones, orbit, nasoorbitoethmoidal complex (NOE), zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC), frontal sinus, and finally, pan-facial fractures. CT scans of each area are covered in all three views with examples of fractures.
There is also an opportunity to scroll through and analyze several CT scans for practice and you will receive a certificate upon completion of the course.
CTRead fills a gap in oral and maxillofacial surgery training programs globally. It was developed by Dr Wendall Mascarenhas with the support of Dr Daniel Richmond and Dr Genevieve Chiasson for this purpose. The subsequent partnership with the AO Foundation provides ubiquitous and free access to the tool and enhances OMFS training and education.
Every junior resident should complete the course prior to or shortly after beginning their residency program. CTRead has already trained more than 3'800 residents and has an overall satisfaction rate of 95.6%.
What you will learn—CTRead Facial Bones Anatomy Training by modules
-
1 Basics
Before learning to identify facial fractures, it is important to understand the basics of CT scans and how you view them. In this module you will learn about axial, sagittal, and coronal views, as well as the different “windows” you can apply to scans, such as Bone or Soft Tissue.
-
2 Mandible
This module will focus on fractures of the mandible. You will learn the normal anatomy of the mandible on a CT scan in all three views, see examples of fractures, and have an opportunity to scroll through and analyze several CT scans for practice.
-
3 Maxilla
This module will focus on fractures of the maxilla. You will learn normal anatomy of the maxilla on a CT scan in all three views, see examples of fractures, and have an opportunity to scroll through and analyze several CT scans for practice.
-
4 Nasal Bones
This module will focus on fractures of the nasal bones. You will learn normal anatomy of the nasal bones on a CT scan in all three views, see examples of fractures, and have an opportunity to scroll through and analyze several CT scans for practice.
-
5 Orbit
This module will focus on fractures of the orbit. You will learn normal anatomy of the orbit on a CT scan in all three views, see examples of fractures, and have an opportunity to scroll through and analyze a number of CT scans for practice.
-
6 Nasoorbitoethmoidal complex (NOE)
This module will focus on fractures of the nasoorbitoethmoidal complex. You will learn the normal anatomy of this region on a CT scan in all three views, see examples of fractures, and have an opportunity to scroll through and analyze a number of CT scans for practice.
-
7 Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC)
This module will focus on fractures of the zygomaticomaxillary complex. You will learn normal anatomy of the ZMC on a CT scan in all three views, see examples of fractures, and have an opportunity to scroll through and analyze several CT scans for practice.
-
8 Frontal sinus
This module will focus on fractures of the frontal sinus. You will learn normal anatomy of the frontal sinus on a CT scan in all three views, see examples of fractures, and have an opportunity to scroll through and analyze several CT scans for practice.
-
9 Putting It All Together (PIAT)
This module will focus on amalgamating your knowledge from the previous modules. You will learn an overall comprehensive approach to interpreting a CT scan to identify all facial fractures and have an opportunity to scroll through and analyze several CT scans for practice. This module will focus on fractures of all areas of the face, including examples of pan-facial fractures!

"I really appreciated this course. It is very useful, concise, easy to understand, perfect for young residents."
"Excellent videos, excellent learning tool!"
"I took the course in my first year of residency and it was really useful! I always encourage junior residents to take the course."
"The study of CT is lacking in my residency program. I recommend this course to all my junior residents to equip themselves with skills and competencies necessary for their first year of residency."
