Remembering AO Trustee, Iain H McVicar
We are saddened to inform you of the death of AO Trustee Iain H McVicar, who passed away in Nottingham, United Kingdom, on June 11, 2022. Iain first became acquainted with the AO as a young surgeon attending the AO Davos Courses, an experience that began his extensive relationship with our surgeon network and dedication to the AO's educational mission.
As a highly engaged long-time member of AO CMF, Iain was widely respected by his AO CMF colleagues. Iain served as Chairperson of the AO CMF Global Education Taskforce and later AO CMF Education Commission. In these roles, he was first a permanent guest and later a member of the AO CMF International, and European and Southern Africa Board. For several years, Iain was on the AO UK and Ireland Board.
Iain was passionate about education and worked tirelessly to promote the AO's principles internationally and within the UK. He began his decades-long AO Faculty tenure with a Tips for Trainers course in the UK in 1998, after which Iain went on to lead numerous AO courses, including AO CMF Advanced Seminars and AO CMF Principles Courses. He was instrumental in ensuring that AO courses achieved their objectives and outcomes assessments.
This dedication to training and mentorship did not stop at the AO, as Iain was a steadfast champion of education at the University of Nottingham's School of Medicine, where he was the clinical sub-dean. Iain also served as the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for Nottingham University Hospitals and was known for supporting and encouraging trainees to attain the highest standards in medicine.
Iain leaves behind a significant legacy in craniomaxillofacial surgery and education. He is survived by his wife Helen and his daughters, Kathryn, Rachel, and Mhairi.
