AO North America CME Mission

Purpose:

The Continuing Medical Education (CME) mission of AO North America, Inc. (AO NA®) is to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary needs-based education to surgeons, fellows, residents, and medical students studying or treating musculoskeletal disorders, in particular, orthopedic, hand, craniomaxillofacial, spine, adult reconstruction, sports, podiatric, and veterinary surgery in the areas of trauma (i.e.), operative reduction and fixation), degenerative disorders, deformities, tumors, and reconstruction.

Expected Results:

Expected results of AO NA's CME activities for surgeons, fellows, residents, medical students, mid-level providers and therapists are to:

• Increase their knowledge base and surgical skill levels
• Improve competence by applying advances in knowledge to patient care in the areas of trauma, degenerative disorders, deformities, tumors, and adult reconstruction surgical techniques.
• Address practice performance gaps by improving management of aspects of traumatic injuries and musculoskeletal disorders (i.e., pre-operative planning to post-operative care).

The Content for the CME Program Will Focus On:

Content of the CME program focuses on the teaching of AO Principles as well as best practices for the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries to include but are not limited to trauma, degenerative disorders, deformities, tumors, and adult reconstruction surgical techniques. The educational formats for the CME program are designed to encourage learner interaction, offer feedback, and promote learner reflection which may lead to verifiable outcomes.

Characteristics of Participants Include:

• Surgeons specializing in specific anatomic areas within the orthopedic, hand, craniomaxillofacial, spine, adult reconstruction, sports, podiatric and veterinary specialties
• Medical Students, residents, and fellows in training & other mid-level providers.
• Practicing surgeons with an interest in trauma, degenerative disorders, deformities, tumors, and reconstructive techniques.

Types of Activities Include:

• Basic Principles that focus on fundamental principles and techniques (including operative reduction and fixation)
• Advances in the field that address the application of principles and techniques for surgical approaches and techniques.
• Complex concepts and solutions for clinical and surgical problems and complications
• Specific problems of the musculoskeletal system
• Faculty development programs
