Dr. Boudrieau Tribute

With a heavy heart, we at AO North America share with you the news of Randy Boudrieau’s passing on Nov 29, 2023. Dr. Boudrieau’s name is undoubtedly familiar if you have studied for the AVDC certification examination in the last 20+ years. Dr. Boudrieau was a diplomate of the ACVS and ECVS. He had a particular passion for maxillofacial trauma, publishing numerous articles about repair and reconstruction in peer-reviewed journals and multiple textbook chapters. With the founding of the AVDC-OMFS and ACVS-OMFS, Dr. Boudrieau was recognized as a founder of both. He also was a longtime contributor (decades) to AO North America and taught AO courses worldwide. In addition to his worldwide speaking reputation, Dr. Boudrieau brought his expertise to the 2016 VDF with a lecture and lab.

There are no services planned at this time, and a celebration of Randy’s life may take place in the spring in Massachusetts. Randy’s wife asks for privacy at this time.

Personally, Randy was very much a mentor and father figure to me as we co-developed AO North America’s Veterinary Craniomaxillofacial Trauma and Reconstruction course, which we co-chaired in Las Vegas (2013 to present) and Davos, Switzerland (2014). Randy is a role model, tremendous friend, and mentor. Randy’s pioneering work and investigation will continue to shape and mold orthopedic and maxillofacial trauma and repair for generations to come. Randy was a long-time member (> 15 years) of the Veterinary Experts Group (VEEG) within the AO Technical Commission and played a tremendous role in the development and clinical testing of the state-of-the-art AO Approved veterinary implants that are used today.

Rest easy, Randy, and thank you for your contributions to advance veterinary dentistry and oral surgery.

Randy was instrumental in my development as a surgeon, researcher, and educator. He trained me in basic surgical and orthopedic techniques when I was a veterinary student, advanced techniques as a resident and we developed even more advanced techniques as colleagues. It is my privilege to call him my friend and mentor. His legacy will live on as we employ what he taught us to train the veterinary orthopedic surgeons of the future. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I first met Randy at an AO course in Courchevel, France in 2002, a course which was a defining moment in my orthopedic career. Randy, who at the time lectured in his best French, inspired the entire audience with state-of-the-art techniques for pelvic trauma repair. His surgical style is, just like his laugh, unmistakable and he leaves in his wake an entire generation of surgeons who won’t be afraid to use 2 plates on any given bone. We will miss you, Randy. Thanks for your passion, dedication, and mentorship. You are a giant that many of us feel proud and privileged to have known.
